From rice paddies to boardrooms: A lesson in impactful communication

Updated: Jun 17
This summer, while touring the rice fields in Lombok, Indonesia, I thought the kids would get bored, tired, or give up in the heat.
Instead, they stayed engaged for hours.
The reason? Our guide, Yan.
What could have been a routine tour became one of the highlights of our trip. Somehow, Yan kept us listening, learning... and walking for hours in the heat.
Whether you’re explaining the rice harvest process or a complex work project, the same communication principles apply.
What made Yan such an effective guide wasn't simply his knowledge—it was the way he shared it.
Eye contact – imagine if he’d looked at his feet the whole timePacing – adjusting speed to aid engagement and understandingClarity – presenting information so it was easy to followVoice – projecting loud and clear, with energy and enthusiasmInteraction – involving us throughoutStories – helping us engage and relateHumour – light moments that kept it funWhen you bring these skills into your own talk, you can transform even the driest topic into something your audience is eager to hear.
There was another lesson in that tour too.
Seeing firsthand the amount of effort required to produce a single grain of rice was incredibly humbling. Since then, we've made a point of finishing every last grain on our plates.
Looking back, Yan gave us a masterclass in impactful communication.
Great communication doesn’t just share information—it creates a lasting impression. It moves people to think, feel, or act differently. ✨
